To my friends

To my friends from different times in life...

I wish I had a great poem to recite about friendship that captures how it feels to meet friends from younger, easier, free-er times! And to miss it but also relish in how we are still in touch. I can't quite capture that feeling, but its fleeting and at the same time, constant when said friends are around.

After Montse and Giovanni visited, Xenia visited, then Ada and Adrian and many of my college friends, and then, last but not least, Chikie and his girlfriend visited.  And more to come---the year is not over yet and we are expecting at least 4 more visitors :)

I love that people want to visit LA and I love it more that they want to stay with Chris and I.  I think it's such a privilege to be able to host and also to have friends feel comfortable and close enough to want to stay. I'm not going to lie, I've been to Griffith, Getty, Santa Monica, and many other tourists and local favorite spots more times this year than ever before, but I still very much enjoy the places!

With Xenia's visit came dinner with Anna.  We all, Montse included, went to LSE together about 8 years ago. When I sat to eat and chat with them, I was transported back to my days in London---not carefree, but free-er because I was a student, with lots of young people full of ambition and curiosity for the world, and full of hope that we'd do something good for the world.  Also, full of compassion.  We are all still doing really good, compassion-driven, work at a higher capacity and level. For that I'm so proud of us all.  But we've all gone through so many changes as well--hardships, moves, discovery, and I think grown-up things like costs of living specifically housing costs, social justice issues that worry us, feeling helpless in how the world is changing, health issues, now preoccupy our minds and hearts. I felt like I was watching a movie about us growing up - it is happy but also melancholy in a way to see how the passage of time affects us all.  Not necessarily a bad thing, just interesting. In any case, it was surreal because I didn't really think we'd all see each other again!

And then came our visit with Ada and Adrian, and other ND out of town guests like Erin, Eric, Jess, Juan, and Steph for Joey's wedding.  College friends I expect to see post college for some reason. I think having a group chat that has been going on for years helps, going to reunion every 5/10 years helps, and living in a hometown of two of these friends helps!  Nevertheless, it's always awesome to get the group back together, especially to celebrate a special wedding--of which guys...I did a reading at :)  I also met up with Anthony one weekend, and then with Shefali on another.  They visit LA more often, but so happy they still take time to reach out to me to get a meal together. With people I see more often, I feel like we are growing older together.

Finally Chikie and his fiance, Mei. Chikie and I know each other from my Shanghai days (2008).  Post college, my friend Erin and I went to Shanghai to learn Chinese.  Chikie was my classmate.  There was a large group of us in my class that just got along so well and we often got together to travel China, practice Chinese, eat, play soccer, and just hang out. We all liked each other so much.
I visited Chikie and Chilun, his twin, in Germany after I went to London and I honestly wondered if I would ever see them or any of the group from China again. We are all from different parts of the world, and were all there for various reasons.  I learned so much from these guys---just about life, the intangible things, as with any interaction with people different places than me. GUYS--- this is why international travel and study are so important and I'm so thankful to have had those opportunities.

With their visit, we finally met up with Jeff and Woojung. And I felt a deep and urgent nostalgia for my days in Shanghai that I have basically been dormant, buried somewhere in my mind. It was me missing with almost desperation the days of frolicking, with little responsibility but to immerse myself in Chinese culture, food, language, and history. And doing this with a group of people I enjoyed being around. A time of exploration and being impressed with everything! A time when we weren't jaded and we were excited to experience anything. Being a language student is the best. I miss it---I could almost feel and see myself walking around the streets of Shanghai, buying noodles from the cafeteria, dumplings from the shack on the little street behind Erin's apartment, and buying multicolored matching panda shirts together. Ah... to be carefree and open to the world.

It also made me think of this image ;  I want to do this for myself and the cities I've lived in my life-- I think my Shanghai one is her Chile experience.

I miss and long for my younger self's curiosity, sense of time (that there was a lot of it), and openness-- does that even make sense?  It's not because current life is bad, no!! Current life is also awesome, but wow, only once it was past and I revisited it again, did I realize what it meant to be in your early to mid-20s and love, hope, dream (amidst anguish and stress of what is to come of us) the way 20 something year olds do.  I will never have that again and I think back about it with happy and joyful tears, also a deep sense of gratitude to my parents who had the insight to value broadening horizons through travel and interacting with people who are different from me. And now I feel a sense of urgency in how fast time passes by, and how important it is to be present (also that I should get back into meditation asap!)

Some pictures from my visits with the lovely people who have brought me so many beautiful moments and memories. And the opportunity to relive them again.

Montse and Giovanni

The best thing that happened this month is Montse and Giovanni's visit to LA!

We ate lots of good food, including a delicious Italian and Catalonian dinner cooked by our guests. And took a day trip to Channel Islands! One of the other days, they visited all the big Hollywood tourists spots while I worked remotely at a nearby coffee shop --- but it was great quality time to just spend the day without any time constraints and catching up.  When they left, I was so sad that our time together ended. It's so hard to meet up with old friends ---and I was really grateful they visited.

Here are some of our pictures from the week!
 Very hot...climbing Griffith Observatory-

THIS MEAL! and these PEOPLE :)

The Last Book Store in DTLA is one of my favorite spots-

We are ready to go cave kayaking!

Crystal clear waters --- amazingly beautiful.
 um...how cute are they?
 Post kayak, hike!

What happened this May

As you may notice, I'm playing some major catch up in the blog realm.

Instead of my usual, things I can't let go of for the month, I'm doing a month of May activities!

Some of my May highlights include:

1) Weekend in Chicago and South Bend Indiana!
Chris and I spent a weekend in Chicago and South Bend, IN at the beginning of May for Zach's wedding.  (Yes, I went to ND twice in one month - re: my reunion first weekend in June).
In Chicago, we met with Sun Joo, visited a museum at U of Chicago, went up the Willis Tower (I'm terrified of heights), had dinner at the Publican (delicious) with my cousin Grace and her husband Jason, and had deep dish pizza.  Did you know that if you walk around Chicago---you will smell a scent of dark chocolate?  Chris kept saying it was sewage, but it smelled like dark chocolate cookies to me... haha, and guess what! It was dark chocolate coming from a chocolate factory downtown.

We then drove to South Bend for a beautiful wedding at the Basilica and a fun, intimate reception in South Dining Hall.  Zach and Crystal are such thoughtful friends, of course, all of the people we met at the wedding were just as thoughtful, kind and devoting their lives to doing good work.  It was also Chris' first time at ND, so that was fun seeing his reactions to my four years living on campus and just how random ND customs seem to an outsider!

2) Cinespia with Juan and Christian
We saw North by Northwest, a Hitchcock classic and apparently the beginning of all mystery movies! I love Cinespia and after last year's fun summer movie experience, we made it a point to go again this year.  It was basically Juan's last full weekend in LA before he moves to Washington, DC so I'm glad we got to do something iconic LA together.  Chris and I made kimbap and salad, and brought all sorts of foods to picnic with.  OF course, I forgot blankets in the car so I froze a bit.

3) We bought a sous vide!
Is this something all married couples do?  It seems that way....well we took the plunge using a gift card someone gave us and got a sous vide! Here we come, world of sous vides, hahaha

4) Meditation
I've started a class via UCLA called MindFit. It's meditation class twice a week. So far, so good. I find myself joyful during and after meditation and so incredibly restful. It really is a tool that requires practice and a lot of discipline, but the reward seems worth it.

5) May Gray
It's cloudy and cold here this month, but it hasn't stopped us from visiting the outdoors!  Here we are at Leo Cabrillo hike and Paradise Cove in Malibu with Chloe and Chris.  The day lightened up by the time we got to Paradise Cove as you can see here!

Do you remember that commercial with the dad from Modern Family throwing fresh smelling laundry into the ocean? It's a laundry detergent commercial...it is filmed here! Do you recognize that beach?

6) And finally...SOONIE!! the Morning Glory character notebook.
My sunbae unni, Sue, found an old notebook as she was helping a family friend clean out their home, of the Morning Glory character Soonie!  This character's lifeline was about 1 year when I was in middle school in Korea. I bought up all the notebooks, erasers, pencils with her character on them...cause how could I not! She wasn't popular enough though and she was quickly discontinued. Anyway...here it is!  It's cut off a bit in this picture, but Soonie's byline is that she  is generous and loves to take care of animals, hahaha!

An ND 10-year reunion

This past weekend, I went to my 10-year college reunion at Notre Dame.  I know it's a little strange to go to a college reunion, but it's a pretty big deal at ND and we've had a good group of friends who went for the 5-year reunion. We'd also been talking about a 10-year reunion for the past 5 years!

I had SO much fun!!! I wasn't expecting to have so much fun, but I did! The first time I went back for campus at my 5-year reunion, I was full of nostalgia and I was so excited to reunite with friends who I knew, but weren't close enough to actually speak with after graduation.

The 10 year, I saw a lot of faces I recognized, but could not, for the life of me, remember HOW I knew them, and even more embarrassingly, couldn't remember their names! At one point, I approach a classmate and said.."don't we know each other?"  We did! But we couldn't figure out why or how our paths had crossed and we forgot each others name.  I wasn't brave enough to approach everyone I recognized---I was scared they wouldn't remember me and we'd have one of those awkward..."who are you again?" moments or with one of us pretending we remember...yikes!

Regardless, it was great to be back on campus all together and to frolic like the good ol days on campus without a care in the world of what else is going on. ND is really REALLY isolated, Ashley and I kept saying, war could break out, and ND would just keep on going with its pristine well-watered grass and top-notch facilities, and truly real isolation by farm land from the rest of the world. It's a beautiful, idyllic escape.  It's also very cult-ish --- Joey, Ashley and I couldn't stop laughing at WHY the university had such weird mascots for the dorms, it just didn't make sense, but at the time we accepted without question.

We wandered through the buildings, saw the new renovation and technology the University has been adding, rode bikes around the lakes, I finally went to the Backer!! and I closed out the night dancing and singing til 4am!, I jumped into the stone henge and slashed around in the water singing our alma mater at 4am, haha, ate at South Dining Hall (love), and slept in a dorm (but this time I had my own shower, score!), I met with Priscilla, visited Legends, and we took many many pictures in front of Touchdown Jesus. I even lit a candle at the Grotto and walked through the main building. We even went to a lecture on Galactic Astronomy in ND's new planetarium..how cool is that major.  All in all, it was a great weekend, better than I had expected.

A few things that shocked me:
1) ND tuition is now 65k a year. 10 years ago, I believe it was 48K, how did it go up 20K in 10 years?
2) Rainbow flags peeped throughout campus, something that never would have existed 10 years ago
3) The new Center for Social Concerns is the most liberal place on campus, and I'm happy that liberals have a place that's well funded on campus!
4) ND will always be the same--especially South Quad where I spent my 4 years.

Please enjoy some pictures of this past weekend!

I can't stop laughing at this video!!!
Ada: penguin, Ashley: bird, Me: Shrimp, Joey: cat?, Steph: Elephant

San Luis Obispo

This past weekend Chris and I drove to San Luis Obispo for Kathy and Scott's wedding.

San Luis Obispo or SLO as locals call it is a city right smack in the middle of L.A. and San Francisco. It is a small college town surrounded by vineyards and wineries and not far from Pismo Beach. We drove up early Saturday morning with one of Kathy's friends and had lunch at Firestone Grill - a delicious, casual, BBQ sandwich place that is clearly a local and tourist favorite. The tri-tip beef sandwich is to die for, and it is less than $10. It was amazing, just be sure to ask for extra BBQ sauce.

We took a stroll around SLO downtown taking in the boutique stores and coffee shops and came across...Bubble Gum Alley!  I don't really understand why this is here, but I had to take pictures and contribute my gum to the wall.  It is literally a wall of chewed gum. Strange and disgusting, right?

Main street is very artistic, and I was intrigued by this bench and how you could grow plants on the sides of the seat!

Afterwards we got ready for the wedding and headed to Madonna Inn. Madonna Inn is a huge SLO tourist attraction and a place to stop by if driving through the city for a drink or dinner. It is such a unique place! Let's just say, lots of hot pink, very colorful, and one-of-a-kind experience.

In many ways, I feel it was the perfect place for Kathy and Scott's wedding- it was classy, yet quirky and thoughtful, new and at the same time familiar, and so unique and truly different. Kathy came down that golden stair case, instead of walking down the aisle, which I thought was a great twist.  It's the first wedding we went to after our own, and I'm not going to lie, it was great! being a guest and I definitely felt a deep sense of appreciation for all the thought and detail that goes into hosting a party.
I also got to wear the skirt my mom bought me from Thailand, so double yay!
Congrats to the new couple :)

Sunday morning, we woke up early and headed to Scout Coffee Co. for some delicious tea and a pumpkin muffin. This coffee shop was so adorable and you could tell the owners really cared about the product and people's experience. They control every process of their coffee/tea from growing beans to serving the drinks. We took some early morning photos--
Huge bowls of honey tea with homemade almond milk!

Good morning! There were NO cars on the street, this is what I imagine living in a small city is like. It's nice and quiet, no hustle and bustle.
Love the high ceiling and clean look of the coffee shop!

After a quick breakfast we headed to Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort for a dip in their outdoor private hot spring and Swedish Massage therapy! I don't have any pictures of the outdoor private hot springs but it was so much fun being naked outside surrounded by nature in a hot tub. Neither of us had had a Swedish massage before and were both in desperate need for some R&R.  I think it was a great close to a relaxing weekend in SLO!

As we drove back to LA, we stopped by a very very small town (literally one street with stores/restaurants and two gas stations) for some delicious flatbread pizza at Full of Life Flatbread. We found this restaurant in a NYtimes article and reviews were outstanding. It did not disappoint.

Before we went to SLO for the weekend, I read many blogs and travel articles about the city and how to make for a good weekend getaway. I wish we had had a chance to ride ATVs on Pismo beach sand dunes- but with Chris' neck condition, we thought massages would be smarter. It was a very relaxing weekend and nice to getaway from LA traffic and noise, and to really see the landscape of Central California. I never get sick of driving along the PCH and looking out into the ocean and I'm thankful for happy excuse to spend time in SLO.
